I believe that I am not abnormal in my love for Downton Abbey, the iTV/PBS show that just (in Britain) finished its second season. This phenomena crossed the pond last year, when PBS aired the first season. I was massively delighted when I came to London just in time for the British premier of the second season. Period costume dramas are one of my favorite film and television genres (is “period film” a genre?), and I love how this came from an original screenplay — not an adaptation from a book. Don’t get me wrong — I love Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and the hoard of other Austin adaptations that have been brought to film and the silver screen over the past decade. But it is so nice to watch a period drama and not already know how it will turn out in the end, because you’ve read the book! 🙂
I’ve just learned from the latest issue of The Lady magazine that not only has Downton been renewed for a third season, but it will also air a Christmas special next week. Hurray! I’ll have to set my DVR to record this gem so I’ll be able to get my fix when I return to London in the new year.
